What if...

Question

What if by law you could only get married once?  You can still get a divorce from your spouse but once married, you're not allowed to ever marry again?  Would people be more careful who they married or would that not change and we'd end up a nation of live-in couples?

I don't think anyone gets married with the intention of divorce. Things change people lie. I mean just personally I would never get married again, I married my husband and I intend to stay with him forever but even if -touch wood- something happened I'd never get married again, to me it loses the power it should hold. 
But I understand from other people's view, my mum married my dad but he had severe mental health issues so she had to leave him for safety. 15 years later she married my step dad, he is like a knight in shining armor and I'm so happy for her.

I'm going to to say that I think that people would be more inclined to not get married young at all but to live with, procreate, and build a life with someone for some healthy years before that commitment.  I mean, this rule doesn't apply and my husband and I lived together, grew together, and learned eachothers quirks, flaws, and perfections for 5 years before marriage. I think more people would go this route to make sure their one chance is a good one.

I'll only get married once. He's stuck with me. You mad? Go to the living room or take a walk outside. You cheat? Imma beat you and then we'll get some counseling. You fall out of love? We'll fix it together.

I think it would cut down on people getting married on a whim. I didn't get married till I was 35 yrs old. I was engaged once, but knew it wouldn't have worked, so I left him. I will be with my husband forever.

A lot of people aren't married because they're scared of divorce or maybe that's just their excuse.
In my religion you're only allowed to marry once, but in my opinion I think if the first person wasn't right why wouldn't God send u someone who makes u happy.

I think people would be much more careful with the choice they made. I married my husband only after knowing him a few months. We were together 17 years but it was awful. Many of those years we were separated. Maybe living together first has its merits....I just wasn't raised that way, but maybe I should've been. Should've at least considered it. Anyway hindsight and all that.
