What do you consider the "first" day of your period?

I have brown discharge for a day or two before the heavy red flow days. Ive been told the brown discharge is just "old blood", but for official tracking purposes, do i count that first brown discharge day as day 1, or is the first day of my period the first red day?

I log it in as spotting but I don't start the period until I see a blood bath in my undies

The clinic I go to for fertility counts the first day to be the first day of heavy flow.

I don't count the brownish discharge because I have it like 3 hrs prior to actual bleeding, but I just log it in as spotting
