Do I have to wait until my third trimester to go to the dentist?

You can go anytime if you are in pain. I am a Dental Hygienist. Regular hygiene visits are also very important and I have seen pregnant women for them at any stage in the pregnancy. The best time to have any actual treatment is within the second trimester but it is still considered safe anytime. X-rays are technically considered safe because they use the lead apron but most dentists will only take one if you are in pain and they need to check the tooth for an abscess or need to do an extraction

I went during my first trimester. They told me the x-rays are safe if you really need them. But I declined them anyway since I wasn't having any issues and didn't want to risk it. My next appointment is about 3 weeks before my due date.

Great question!! I went in the beginning of my 2nd they said to come at my 3rd too. My insurance and most insurance plans cover a 2nd cleaning when you are pregnant. Check with your health insurance company. They ask you to wait for x rays but every dentist is different, talk to you HCP or PCP about if it's safe. Best wishes, Lauren
