Breastfeeding Affect Conception?

Question

I breastfeed my 18 month old toddler 5-6 times (on demand) a day. We are ttc#2 for a couple months now and still no baby. Ive had no problems with the first conception.

I came away from my doctor office today with the answer that "breastfeeding can make conception harder." I am heartbroken if this is true. I would like to continue breastfeeding until my toddler weans herself.  I will be heartbroken. But if I want a second baby now at my old age, then I'd better suck it up and try this out. My fear in the end of this is no baby and losing my breastmilk.

What are your experiences?

I fantasized that I could continue to breastfeed my toddler while being pregnant. My mother who had 10 children said there is no breastmilk to give a toddler during pregnancy. Is there any truth to this? I'm skeptical.

Nursing frequently tends to inhibit ovulation. I didn't ovulate until I stopped nursing.

You could try just decreasing breastfeeding to 1-2 times a day and that may help you get pregnant, but it will still be harder than if you weren't breastfeeding. I was breast feeding my toddler when I got pregnant about 4 times a day. My milk dried up within 2 week of getting pregnant ( basically this is how I knew I was pregnant). I tried a lot to keep it going but it was impossible. He luckily didn't mind and transitioned easily. Some woman can breast feed while pregnant but many cannot.

I'm interested to know for sure too, I'm still nursing my 13 month old, and miscarried a couple months ago...my Dr never said anything though, and I have several friends who nursed through pregnancy and then tandem nursed their toddler and newborn...
