Credit/joint banking question

My man has excellent credit history he can finance cars and is eligible for a mortgage. I was dragged up and never taught the importance of anything including credit. So when i was 16 i started purchasing alot of crap on finance and never paid it on time and would let the bills sit for months i didn't care. Now its biting me on the ass, i can't even get a clothing store card. I cant get anything. If we make our account joint (which we plan to do once we marry) will that help my credit? The name change from marriage and joint account?
