Has anyone had to (or chose to) bring their children into l&d?!

My daughter is 4 years old and we live 13 hours away from our family so no one is able to watch our daughter when I give birth in September. I was just wondering if anyone else had their other children present? If so, any tips to keep them occupied? I don't plan on having her watch but she is mommys little helper and I know she'll want to hold my hand and take care of me so I plan on bringing her doctor kit to "help"

I was 4 (almost 5) when my little brother was born-- same situation with no family in state. My parents let me have a sleepover with my good friend! I think that's a great option.

I went into labor with my daughter in the middle of the night while home alone with my then three year old. I had no choice but take him. It was about 2:30 in the morning and the nurses were amazing. He stayed with me until it was time to push. The another nurse walked him down the hall to get juice and graham crackers so by the time he came back, his baby sister had arrived. The staff kept him pretty occupied.

Does the hospital have a type of daycare? Or  maybe go on care.com and see if you can hire a reputable sitter to watch her. I can't imagine having a little one in there...I'm just thinking about how seeing you in pain could scare her and Just be traumatic. Just my opinion though :)

Most hospitals have great staff and when you're pushing they will watch your child while you push let him watch TV at there desk ect , when I go to the hospital with my son and they're doing things they don't want him in the way for they usually intervene and it's better for everyone while no one gets hurt lol .

Most hospitals won't even allow a child under 13. It's ine of those "non optional" things, as it's dangerous. Children can be tripped over and God forbid there be an emergency. You still have time, you may want to start looking into non family alternatives.

You can always bring a chair up by your head for her to stand on. That way she helping but not in the way of the doctors. She can help her dad (or whoever is the room) help hold your legs.

I would bring my son if we absolutely have to. It would be a learning experience for all of us. He wouldn't have to wait to see his sissy and I wouldn't have to worry if he was okay or not.
