Hand me down baby gear?

How does everyone feel about hand me down baby gear? In particular cribs and car seats and strollers? These have been offered to us by sweet friends but I'm skeptical...for safety concerns mostly. Am I paranoid?

Crib and strollers sure... As long as you check them over, and make sure the crib is up to date with all of the safety features. Carseat, personally I wouldn't accept because even if it was in a small fender bender it could be damaged without you even knowing. You can NEVER be too safe with carseats.

No to a used car seat for safety reasons. They also have an expiration date so that's something to take into account. Yes to a used crib but definitely get a new mattress. I read that a used mattress can increase chance of SIDS. Something about the smell of another babies spit and throw up. Plus I wouldn't sleep on a used mattress so I wouldn't want my baby to. Maybe to a used stroller. It depends on how used it is and whether it meets your needs.

A crib in good condition I would be ok with but would get a new mattress.  I almost ended up with a second hand stroller from my SIL but she wanted us to pay for it and I found one I liked better for a really good price so decided to get a new one and tbh I feel a lot more comfortable with the new one.  I wouldn't touch a used car seat with a barge pole for safety reasons.

I have gotten mostly all of my items second hand. My crib was a year old and it's a convertible one. I paid $40 for it. The car seat I also got is only an infant one for now and it will only be a year after being manufactured once I use it (they're good for 7 years). I paid $45 for it. Buying stuff second hand has really made me happy. I have almost everything I need, including clothes up to 9 months, for about $250 total.

Personally, there is no problem with hand me down as long as it clean and was kept on good shape. At first I was against it, but as time went by and the prices of things was a little over my head, I thought why not. The only thing I said I want brand new is the travel system and the mattress, so far as the big items.

If it's in good shape I'll take as much as I can. My best friend/Godmother of my baby gave me her car seat and two big boxes of lightly used clothes. Of course I'll be buying new ones but it does save you some coins lol. With certain things I'll be bougie with.

I'm getting almost everything from my brother and his wife, including a carseat. It has lots of time before it expires, and I know they never had an accident with it. Our stroller and crib are second hand too. It's good to save money for the things that really matter, and use clean safe hand me downs as much as possible.
