Laproscopy - Is it worth it? Posted 2016

Question

I have irregular periods, cramps, and my right ovary aches all the time. I had an US and it showed a cyst on my right ovary. My doctor wants to do a laproscopy to confirm endometriosis. I've read this procedure can cause additional scarring and increase infertility. I've also read that while it might take care of the pain for now, it may come back in a few months/years (but it always comes back). We have been ttc #1 for 13 months with a mc at the 9 month mark. 
Is it worth the pain to have the laproscopy done? Did it help or hinder you from getting pregnant? What is the benefit to having it done? 
Thank you so much for your insight. I'm just trying to make the most informed choice possible.

Completely worth it. I've had one every 2 years for the last 8 years. As for infertility, leaving the endo and cysts can also cause infertility by damaging your insides. I'm also 33 weeks pregnant right now. I would definitely get the laparoscopy.

So worth it.  I just had it done a few weeks ago.  It wasnt bad pain and no spotting now or bleeding w sex or pressure. I will see how my next period goes.

I had laproscopy july 24 '15 and i still get bad pain. My periods are just getting from irregular to now and again normal if that makes sense. Im still not pregnant every month its so hard when i see BFN. I decided to get a fur baby the other day and now he constantly lays on my stomach or on my lap with his head on my stomach is he sensing anything that i dont know?

I would suggest asking your doc about an MRI and regular ultrasounds to see exactly how large the cyst is and if it is growing.  If it is large and/or growing than it may need to be removed.  (Mine did!).

Having a laproscopy just to confirm endometriosis may or may not be worth it.  But having it to treat endometriosis if you are in significant pain, or having it to remove the cyst - is a different story.  I'd say, yes, the latter is worth it.

I just had my first lap in February & it didn't do anything. I went right back to the same chronic pain/bleeding/IBS symptoms when I was fully recovered. I know that everyone is different so it may work for you, but I don't think it was worth the stress/money/time.

I personally never got any relief from having the lap done. It was a huge disappointment.

I'm literally in the same boat, and was coming on here to make the exact post. I've been wanting surgery to see if endo is what's been the cause for all my pain, but now that surgery is booked for the 8th I'm terrified. Good luck with everything

i had the same problem with cysts on my overies and it would hurt so bad i couldnt move without screaming in pain. my doctor wanted to do surgery to remove it and see if i have endometriosis to. i was on the fence about having it but decided to do it and let me tell you it was one of the best decisions i have ever made because not only did it take the pain away i now have more energy and im in better moods. the likelihood of it decreasing your fertility and or something going wrong is so low like .5% or something. trust me when i say you should do it, it will make your life so much better

Had my first one two years ago it literally helped nothing at all everything got progressively worse like the laparoscopy never even happened.

Caution should be taken with suregery for endo. After 15 years of pain and 4 surgeries, I can tell you I wish I knew what I know now then. Find an expert. I know of two in NYS. Do not settle for a lap by your regular GYN, they don't know what endo looks like and yes, it causes more scarring and endo grows on the scarring.
