Etsy questions!

I am currently a stay at home mom almost done with high school (graduating next month). I was just wanting to start sewing and eventually maybe start an etsy shop. I would like to sell blankets to start off with, just basic things, and maybe do custom orders. My question is, how did you guys start? What sewing machines would you recommend? (I don't need anything fancy though buttonhole maker would be nice). Do you make a decent amount in sales? And any other answers would be appreciated on what to be expected?
