Baby's hair

I was told by multiple people that my baby's hair is going to fall out and grow back and that's just what babies do. Is this true? If so, how long does it take to grow back? My son was born with a head full of hair but it's thinning out some and I was wondering if it was a coincidence or if they were telling the truth :)
