I've always offered my boyfriend something when we go out to eat, or when we're shopping. But when it comes to him, he doesn't. (He's unemployed) but he can buy shoes and new clothes?? Is it rude I'm expecting even a little small gift in return? Like I'd be content with a stuff animal.

Offer to pay for dinner once in a while yes, absolutely you should expect that.

Gifts however, no. I was taught that it's bad mannered to expect gifts from people.

If he is unemployed, then yes, that's rude. Gifts shouldn't be expected, especially from people with no income.
