Crack baby?

If a family member does intense cocaine and gets their baby taken away at birth for being a crack cocaine baby...Will CPS automatically put that child in foster care or can a family member adopt the baby?

I'm talking about a responsible family member that has a clean background check and has kids of their own. We will speak to a lawyer and go through the entire process but we would just like general knowledge.

Family is always their first choice. You'll still have to do a home study probabky, but the goal is to keep babies with their family. Please keep in mind though, they are still going to try and help the mother and if she improves and completes the steps they ask of her they can return the baby to her. There will be steps they have to go through before clearing the baby for adoption.

Keeping the child within the family is always preferred but the goal is usually eventual reunification with the parent if that's possible. If the baby tests positive he/she may be kept in the NICU for a while though.

I know someone who's sister had a baby & he was addicted to crack when he was born & she got the baby when he was 2 days old.

From experience, my sister in law tested positive for methamphetamine (clean now praise the Lord) and my mom was able to take my niece home from the hospital. So I would say yes the baby could go to a close responsible family member
