Do you think the way someone treats an animal is the same way they'd treat a child?

So my boyfriend and I got a new puppy. He is now 4 months. He is mostly potty trained but still pees and poops in the house occasionally. And when he does, I am not against a good old school ass whoopin at all! I'll either thump him on the nose or spank his butt. Not hard, but just so he knows it's bad! Anyways, my boyfriend loves kids and wants some really badly. I'm a pediatric nurse so I am around kids for 12 hours at a time and I know how fussy, annoying, and needy they can really be! It takes a lot of patience to be a caregiver, especially 24/7. My boyfriend has been increasingly getting frustrated with our puppy that he'll just cuss his head off about it and say things about how he wants to get rid of him, and even spank him too hard at times. Sometimes he'll be too lazy to take him to potty or to feed him so he'll wait a little while before he does (like when his show ends 🙄). I told him many times, that if he's impatient with a puppy, he's not going to be able to deal with a child very appropriately but he said "animals and children are very different". True, but in my opinion, animals can be a LOT more well behaved than children! So what do y'all think? Do you think it correlates at all?

On a different note all together, you may want to seek some advice on other methods of training your puppy. Aversive methods such as hitting and spanking are ineffective and will damage the relationship between you and your puppy. No animal should be trained through fear but instead with positive reinforcement techniques. Make sure you find a trainer who uses up to date positive methods and can show you a better, more positive and effective way of training.

Mmmm, not necessarily . I got friends and family who love kids and don't discipline their kids by hitting them .. But they are disgusted by animals and treat em' like dirt .. So .. Eh

I said no only because I saw a child abuse case where the dog was treated better than the children sadly. In your case, I think it shows your boyfriend needs to work on some things. He needs to work on not cussing the dog, hitting it to hard, and setting the puppy up for failure. If the puppy is not being taken out enough, it will pee in the house, when you have to pee, you have to pee.

Definitely but I think it's more do with it being a reflection of who they are as a person and not so much to do with animals and kids being different

I think if he doesn't have the patience and understanding for a puppy he's in for a rude awakening if/when he has a baby. Animals mature a lot faster than humans do. To answer your question though I think it's apples and oranges really. Personally I prefer pets over children any day. Granted, I don't mistreat either one. I've seen people be mean to animals and love kids and I've seen people be mean to kids and love animals. I've also seen people mistreat both and love both. I think it's really based on the individual. That being said, I wouldn't trust someone like that with my dog OR my child.

I don't think the patience level correlates as a baby is your own flesh and blood. However you can probably expect your husband to help out with the baby the same way he helps out with the dog.

He's already abusing an animal. If he can't control himself now he won't when it's a screaming baby.
