Gruesome question
A family of 5 died in a fiery car accident earlier this week in my state. I had never met the family, but we did share mutual friends. The youngest in the family had been born only a few months ago, the oldest was no more than 4 years old.
I was talking to one of my friends about the accident, not gossiping, just trying to debrief the situation and I solemnly admitted that I was sort of glad that the whole family had died together. They all died instantly, no one was left behind, I couldn't stomach the idea of the 4 year old being the only one to live through the crash and have to live the rest of his life without his family. Or the idea of just the mother living while the entire rest of her family died immediately was enough to make me cringe.
However, my friend did not think so. In fact, she was pretty offended that I would even think this, much less say it out loud. She couldn't believe that I was "happy" this entire family died.
I think the two points of view are interesting. I understand where she's coming from, but if my family were to be in this situation, I know I would MUCH rather die with them than be the only one to survive (I'm speaking as a child in a family when I was younger, and also as a mother in a family now).
What do you think? God forbid your family is in any sort of accident, but if you were- would you rather live on, or go with them?
