He made a stupid choice...

And he is punishing himself to the extreme. My SO got caught in a police roadblock going from dinner where he had a couple glasses of wine to meet with a friend. His blood alcohol was barely over the legal limit here (which is even lower than the legal limit in U.S.), but still it was over. It his first offense but his license will still be suspended for a year and he will have to pay a fine. He has a very prestigious job and has never been in trouble before. He is an incredibly straight laced guy who made a dangerous and stupid mistake. We both agree he deserves the punishment but I am afraid he is beating himself up over this too much.
He is imagining the worst possible outcome and is claiming he has ruined his entire life. He is normally very calm and collected and I am always the one to freak out.
I don't know how to help him. I don't know what to say. This all happened last night and he hasn't even been processed for it yet. I just want him to stay calm and be able to handle everything.
Any advice or words of wisdom would be welcome.
