Commercial airline and breast pump?

Question

I'm traveling next month and I breastfeed my baby, we've always had trouble breastfeeding so I just pump and feed. Does anyone know if I can take my electric pump with me and did you pump on flight? Also I have the medela pump that has the battery operated charger and the regular one that hooks onto outlets which one was okay to pass through security? Thanks! 👌🏼any tips are welcome

Print TSA guidelines and have them in hand, as not every officer is familiar as they should be regarding traveling with breast milk. The pump is considered a medical device and does not count towards your carry on.

You can absolutely bring your pump and pump on the flight! I just toss a nursing cover over and glare at anybody that glares at me 😀 Either charger can get through but I used battery on the flight. Getting breastmilk through security is always hit and miss, though. I've been detained for almost an hour, had my bags searched, and been patted down in a back room and asked questions about the age of my baby. It's pretty ridiculous.

I travelled recently and had my medela pump in my carry-on. When I was going through security for my outbound flight, they pulled my bag to the side bc the pump looked suspicious in the X-ray. The male tsa officer was inspecting the X-ray closely and thought it was a radio, but a female tsa officer quickly dismissed it bc she knew exactly what it was without even opening my bag. 😂 I was also carrying about 6oz of BM, which again triggered an inspection. But they ran it through a testing device and I had no issues. On my return flight, the pump didn't even trigger an inspection, but I was carrying about 10oz of BM this time, and I remembered to let the tsa officer know I had that ahead of time. They still had it go through the X-ray, then pulled my bag aside to do a closer testing of my bottles. Besides taking some time to get it inspected, I didn't have any issue with carrying my pump or BM. I would just make sure you have enough time to go through all that...in case you have to wait a bit for the inspection. (One took about 10 mins bc I had to wait for other people before me).

I read about how some women were forced to throw away their BM so I was nervous, but thankfully I didn't have issues and was able to feed my daughter on the flight. If you have time before your flight, maybe pump while you wait at your gate? That way you can have BM ready for your baby for takeoff and landing.

Traveling with a breastpump is pretty common, but different tsa agents handle differently based on their experience.  I always tell them ahead of time (traveled a few times with pump, though no liquid as I was dumping), so that they aren't surprised as it's going through.  I also allow myself extra time to go through security, in case they aren't sure of the protocol.  I also pumped with my modela on the plane, with a nursing cover as this was back when my son was little and I was producing a LOT.  Made sure I had a window seat for my own personal comfort.  Makes sense to go on the airlines website and print out a copy of the tsa guidelines in case they try to give you a problem.  And a breastpump is considered a medical decide, so it does not count towards your carry on items!
