Breastfeeding?????

So after I have baby boy I'm trynna get back on my bi polar meds and I can't take those while breast feeding so now I'm stuck on rather or not to get on them for the health of my child.... No I would never hurt my child or anyone else baby but I have extremely bad bi polar and need the meds so should I go ahead and take the meds and formula feed him or say screw it and breastfeed.... Idk I'm lost on what to do

1. Are you sure you can't take them while breastfeeding? You can call the Infant Risk hotline at 806-352-2519 and they will give you info.

2. If you can't breastfeed, then you formula feed. The most important thing is that baby is fed and mama is well. You have to take are of yourself to take care of your baby <3

Your health is just as important as the babies! I formula fed both my kids and probably this baby to. They are all very healthy. There is NOTHING wrong with formula feeding. Dont feel guilty for taking care of yourself to!

I know you can take anti depressants while breastfeeding... But I think your health it way more important than whether or not breastfeed. There are plenty of babies who are formula fed and just fine! I tried breast feeding my son for about a month and then completely dried up so had to switch him to formula..

I agree that taking care of yourself first is most important. Stress and so many factors can affect your breastfeeding anyways, and there are many many many infinite healthy, smart babies who have been strictly formula fed. Take care of you momma!! There will be many years of taking care of that sweet baby. 😘

You need to take care of yourself first before you can take care of someone else. There's nothing wrong with formula feeding, so don't for one second feel anything other than pride in yourself for taking care of you and baby. You got this!

I've been having the same issue and been waiting for an answer from doc for MONTHS! Finally, after a lot of fuss, I got a solution. I just hope that this will work in real life since I have another 12 days to go before baby arrives!

Anyway:

In the morning, let's say around 9, I breastfeed baby. After that, I pump out milk from the other breast, to keep, then I take my pill.

About 11:30-12:00, I will pump out milk from BOTH breasts and throw it away. About 2,5 hours after you take the medicine the concentration of the med is the highest in your  body, so this is why you need to throw the milk.

After that, you're good to go breastfeeding again until the next morning! Having the extra milk from pumping in the morning will reassure you that the baby doesn't have to be hungry in between!

Mind that I only take 25mg Lamotrigin now instead of my usual 100mg, which is also a rather low dose.

I know that's a hard choice. I am all about mommies breastfeeding, but when it comes to your health then I would definitely bottle feed. I was only able to breastfeed my son for less than two weeks. I felt like a total failure as a mom. I just couldn't produce enough to keep up with him. We ended up back in the hospital for his jaundice and they wouldn't let me breastfeed. So, bottle it was. He was able, of course, to get the colostrum so that was great, but he was bottle fed. He's now 10 and one of the smartest kids in his class. So no worries! Bottle feed and have sound mind as well!

Your mental health and over all health needs to be met to care for baby. If that means you needs medicine do,t be ashamed it happens( 38th my first I had severe ppd and ppa) I couldn't breast feedbut I was able to better care for my son
