Swimming in lies

Ryan Lochte and friends (other fellow swimmers, I believe) recently lied about being robbed at gunpoint in Rio. The story was that they hopped in a cab to leave a bar around 4am and head back to their living quarters when they were stopped by thieves dressed as police officers and robbed of all their cash. They told news members and reported it to local police.
Turns out, they got in a cab around 6am and stopped at a gas station on their way home. There they used the bathroom and proceeded to destroy it. I believe they kicked down a door, broke a mirror, tore down several posters, etc. They were heading back to their cab when they were stopped by the armed gas station security who told them to sit on the curb and pay for the damages (they had about $400 in cash they handed over) and then were released to go home.
Lots of video footage is proving their story to be false and the truth to unfold.
The question is, should they be punished for lying? If so, how badly? Ryan Lochte is already back on US ground and isn't facing many charges, but another swimmer involved with the lie is still in Rio and faces a large fine and up to 6 months behind bars.
