So. From an ER nurses point of view.

For regular checks an axillary temp (under the arm pit) works but if you are noticing that there is a fever then you should do a rectal. Unless your child can do under the tongue temp. Rectal is always most accurate.

I just bought the Kinsa smart thermometer. It has mostly good reviews and you know there's always the bad reviews for everything. It was $19.99 but I got mine for $13. Mouth, underarm, and rectal for all ages.

We used a $10 digital thermometer from the drug store for the first few months, since fevers are significant in small babies and the temporal and ear ones are not as accurate. We got gifted a Braun ear thermometer at the baby shower, so we used that one after he was older and it's great.
