What age should kids get phones? Why?

I believe kids should have a simple phone...
Like a flip phone incase of an emergency.

My daughter won't be getting a phone until she's 12 or 13. And it's gonna be some crappy phone with prepaid text and min, and no Internet access.
As a child you don't need the whole world in your pocket. You don't need to constantly be texting or playing in Snapchat. Gotta be a kid. 
She may hate me but oh well. As she gets older we can upgrade her phone.
Before then, she should be at a place with a parent or other adults around so if there is an emergency then there's no issue of finding a phone to contact me

I made this post, but, it seems engaging. 
I just think the world is way to chaotic. I am not overly paranoid but, a cheap flip phone with a cheap plan won't do anyone harm. 
Before my children call 911, I'll teach them how to talk to the operator and when is it appropriate to call. 
Or if they want to call me at school for a ride or when they are stressed out they can always call momma you know!
Phones are very reliable and I will teach my child how to use one and when it is appropriate.

Whenever my child will be start being on her own for long periods of time (school, daycare, being babysat) then I would like her to have a basic phone to get in contact with me her father or emergency services. But the Internet and texting can wait till she's older.

I think it depends on if they participate in extra curricular activities. If the kid just goes to school and straight home every day, it isn't needed. If you are juggling sport or music practices and other activities, things are more likely to get hectic and I would prefer my child to have a phone. When I was in middle school my mom made me carry around a Walkie talkie 🙄 if I was out of range, I had to turn around and go closer to home.

I was thinking close to the time they get their driver's licence, maybe sooner. Depends. It will be a flip phone, no internet access, they can use a tablet at home. If they are at school and there's an emergency, they can use a school phone. There are always phones within reach. I did just fine without a phone before my driver's licence.

We got my step kids just the cheap trac phones for when they go to their moms for Christmas from Santa. They are were 7 & 9; 8 and 10 now. Needless to say they lost them the next week at her house. I'm glad we went with cheap and not normal service because they're just not mature enough to handle the responsibility. Every kid is different, but in our house they won't be getting one until they're 13 and have matured to keep up with it.
