Irregular period

Can an irregular period make it harder to conceive? I have an irregular period and we few months back my doc said in order to regulate it I have to take birth control for like 3 months. i don't want to be on birth control and nether dose my bf. but it will fix my period so I'm finally gonna do it. But when I say something to my bf about how when my period is done I'm gonna start the bc he said something about how he doesn't want me to take them. But it's only 3 months. So I thought that my irregular period could make it harder for me to get pregnant am I right??
