Tips on getting baby to latch?

Question

Any tips on getting baby to latch? He will sometimes, but gets so frustrated and rips off. I'm not sure why I keep trying and if I just cannot get him to latch after about 15 mins I give him a bottle.  I've been pumping to keep my milk coming and I've had to bottle feed him quite a few times just because I feel like I'm starving him! I know it's just tough but any tips would be greatly appreciated. I refuse to give up.

My little one had the same issue untill I finally broke down and went to a lactation consultant. It turned out that he was "tongue tied", meaning his tongue was to short to get under the nipple and allow him to properly latch. We got his tongue clipped at about a week old and it helped a ton! I know it sounds strange, but make sure your little one's tongue can pass the gum line. Also, remember to give yourself a little praise. Even if you breastfeed for a day, a week or a month you are still doing tremendous good for your baby. There is no shame in seeking help, supplementing or even switching to formula if thats what is best for your child :)

Put some ice on your nipple before a feed to make them stand up.

Try using a nursing pillow or do the lying down position... I find it much easier to latch when lying down!!

TAKE YOUR TIME. Don't get flustered and upset. Baby won't starve. Just keep trying as calmly as you can.

Positioning is everything. Nose should be level with the nipple. Make sure the chin is close to your breast, so that baby's head tips back when they open wide. As soon as the mouth is open I push baby close to my breast and listen for the sucking and swallowing. The nose shouldn't be pressed into your boob, it should be nice and free.

The more you give him a bottle the more he will get used to it. He might feel your anxiousness and he's vining off of you just try to relax and try be wedging your nipple into his mouth. Also try expressing milk so he can get a taste of it and want to suck on it you can try calling 211 for help and if your hospital offered a mommy and me program I would set an appointment with them

FYI babies do drop from their birth weight before the gain it back. So weight loss days after birth doesn't mean he's starving. It's pretty normal.

As far as breastfeeding goes, you may want to see a lactation specialist/look up videos. Make sure he has a good latch and you may want to try and get him to do a breast crawl when he starts to get hungry. If you wait too long he may be too pissed to concentrate. Try latching when he's calm too and that may help both of you.

When my girl rips off after latching for just a second I notice her back goes arched. When she does this I burp her and do skin to skin for a while before I try to latch her again. Most often she will fart, poop, or burp and then be fine to latch and eat.

My little one was the same for a while, and all it took for us was perseverance, so frustrating and hard as it may be just keep at it, you can do this! Maybe have a word with your midwife and get her to show you some better positions, with my son he latched better to start off with when I held him under my arm rather than across my front, and after a few days of doing it like that we were able to get him to latch from the front too, so maybe that's worth a try for you? You'll get there, and if you don't you're not a failure! Xx

Get a nipple shield! I got mine at Target. It looks like a bottle nipple and attaches to your areola. Baby thinks it's a bottle and your nipple is spared the pain of being chapped.
