How do you choose the right crib mattress ?

Which crib mattress did you choose and why ?
So many out there , from soft to firm to microfiber . FTM 24weeks

I bought the fancy Newton crib mattress. I decided to spend extra money on it because he will be sleeping on it for a long time, and I love that it is very breathable. The first thing I did when I got it was stick my face in it to see if I could breathe (I could). Plus, the mattress is completely washable! (Seriously, you can stick the whole the in the shower or hose it down out back if the vomit or pee all over it-which was a huge plus for me). It was pretty expensive though. I decided to buy cheap in several other areas so that I would feel better about spending more money on the mattress. I guess the way I see it, it's the part he will actually be sleeping on, so it's pretty important. The crib it goes in or the dresser in his room is less important to me.

I always stick to the firm ones. You don't want anything to squishy especially for an infant.

We bought the "best seller" one from Walmart.. Online it has over 2000 reviews and 4/5 stars. Many people have said they even replaced it with the same one for future children.. It was $40 so.. I was perfectly fine with that! Lol

I got mine for $50 or so off Amazon. Firm and no dyes/fumes etc. Pick a store. Look at the bottom 2 mattresses (in price) and a couple in the middle. Read reviews on them. If you are in store, then you can touch to make sure firm. It helps if mattress has waterproof cover built in (yet make sure it's not super crunchy sounding lol). I always layer mine with waterproof pad/sheet/waterproof pad/sheet, to make changing easier. Overall as long as it's firm, it's not a big deal. Maybe if you were going to use it for multiple babies over a 5+ year time span, then it would matter more. Otherwise you'll only use for a couple years or so. I tend to move mine into regular beds by time they are potty trained and just put up a side bar.

I want to know if it even matters.  I would rather spend $65 on a mattress than $350.

Honestly the guidelines from the government  (Canada) is that the mattress needs to be a firm infant mattress. Nothing soft it can prove to be a suffocation hazard. You don't need to spend hundreds on a fancy mattress that says it reduces SIDS because there is no evidence that it does.

I got the Secure Beginnings breathable mattress just in case she's a tummy sleeper this gives me great peace of mind.
