I didnt know babies need naps during the day?!

Ok Im going to sound dumb, but Ive never been around babies my whole life..I only have a older brother, no cousins or anything. I didnt know babies needed so much sleep! My 1 month old for the past 3 weeks has been sooo fussy, cries all the time unconsolably, switched formulas, tried gas drops, gripe water everything. He never really sleeps during the day, maybe a few minutes at a time then cries again. But today I decided to swaddle him tight, with the lights off and airconditioner on and hes been sleeping for 3 hours now! Do you guys think he cries so much because he needed more sleep? I honestly thought that if he was tired he'd just fall asleep. Do you kinda need to force them??
