Is it okay to make potential babysitters undertake a police check and other background checks?

Whoever says that's over the top or no either doesn't have kids, or just doesn't care who watches them. I do not blame you for wanting background on who will be watching your child. That's being a good parent making sure you aren't hiring a rapist or a drug dealer by doing a simple background check

No not over the top, babysitting is a job. They give background checks for other jobs, why not give one when your priority is the safety of a kid????

I don't see anything wrong with doing it, but to be honest even a back ground check won't make me trust ppl with my child! People pass background checks all the time and can have no record of any type and still do stuff! For me I have to really know or get to know the person and trust them before I let them watch my child! I don't eve leave my child with family members like that

I like getting referred as a baby sitter, so I'd probably only go that route when I need a sitter. There's nothing wrong with a background check but as most babysitters are teenage girls I doubt you'd ever find anything.

I was a pet sitter and one client requested a background check.  For a dog.. 😄 But also cuz I would have a key to their house and stuff so it's prefectly understandable.  no worries mama!

I've never done background checks on the babysitters for my daughter, but I only allow 3 teenage/college girls from families I've known and trusted for a looooong time watch her. And since I'm a SAHM, she only needs a babysitter when I have doctors appointments or go on date with my hubby or something occasional like that. If it was a stranger watching my daughter, I'd absolutely do a background check! And get references-- people that you actually call!

You get what you pay for- and it is perfectly reasonable to make sure your child is in safe hands.

Yup. Its a job like any other and it's standard to have a background check when hired.
