Segregated Dorms

So I'm a history major, particularly with an emphasis in post Civil War History so as you can imagine, I'm pretty well versed in the "separate but equal" case being ruled as unconstitutional by Plessy V Ferguson which officially outlawed segregation. So what I don't understand is why CSULA is creating an all African American dorm room. I honestly can't comprehend why people would want to separate themselves from the diversity and multicultural spaces that are college campuses.
