In YOUR honest opinion, is it okay to raise children in a rented property?

I've had alot of people saying we should have a mortgage, but even though its cheaper than rent, we don't feel thats for us anytime soon. Were happy renting and feel very financially comfortable. Maybe when our children are grown and we've took them on holidays and they've never wanted for anything, we will then maybe tie ourselves up to a mortgage to leave a house for them. I feel this is our decision, were happier having that freedom to move around and less responsibility to enjoy life that bit more. After watching what my mum went through, after 14 years of paying a mortgage for a beautiful big home, she's now disabled and lost her job and has become bankrupt losing her home. It has just put me off. I want to leave assets to my children when we pass. Dont get me wrong, I would love them to be left their family home they've been born and raised in as it will have alot of sentiment, but at the same time, were loving this freedom for our children. Other people are really getting into our heads now were torn!! Ughhhh

But i want to know what you guys think.

What does it matter if you rent? A home is a home. As long as it's safe and you're able make whatever payments you have either rent or mortgage you can live wherever you choose. To me renting is easier because if something breaks or happens a landlord fixes it. It doesn't come out of my pocket.

Personally I hate renting with children because they ruin everything and I'd rather have holes in a home I own and can repair myself and holes in a rented home 😂😂 But renting is fine if it's for you.

I was raised in a rental home my entire life. I mean thats just silly. As long as their is a safe warm place to rest your head filled with love you doing a wonderful job. Im sure your children are very happy.

That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard! Why wouldn't it be okay to raise a kid in a rented home!? Haha. Everyone's got an opinion! Good Lord!

Of course its ok. Depending on where you live a mortgage can be cheaper than rent, but there's also taxes and a lot more maintenance to worry about. Mortgages also require more cash up front in many cases, and though there are some programs for down-payment assistance they're not all truly good deals. You also may want to move at some point, and buying is only cost effective if you're there 7+ years on average.

I understand your adversion to buying given your mom's history. But same could happen to you renting too. Buying would at least put your money toward something you would eventually keep versus throwing it away in rent. Who knows, you may not ever face a situation like your mom did. The money you would save from the difference in mortgage/rent could be put away for an emergency future fund should you ever lose your jobs or anything. The con about renting besides not having an asset is that you are always at the mercy of your landlord. I have seen a lot of bad things happen to renters. But home ownership can also be a pain too. So really it's whatever you feel comfortable with. Just listing some pros and cons so you can make the best decision for your family :) best of luck! 😊

It's the old adage, "Mo' money, mo' problems". You see, some parents rent because it's their only option... so I'm gonna go ahead and say yeah, it's okay to raise kids on rented property.......?????? O.o

My husband and I will be in a rental for the foreseeable future. He's in law school and we don't know where he'll end up afterwards. Could we afford to buy? Absolutely. But we're not comfortable buying someplace and be locked in when we know we'll have to move, possibly multiple times to multiple cities, even multiple provinces while my husband is building his career. I have zero issue raising my child/children in a rental property.

A lot of people rent. At least it's a roof over your head. When the time is right, you'll be able to buy. If not, oh well!
