If you are going for the pronunciation of Joan-ie, I would go with the 2nd spelling...I only say that because when I read your post I instantly wanted to pronounce the first spelling as Johnny? I think either way works but as an outsider I just thought I'd comment :)

Sometimes, 'Joni' is pronounced like the name 'Johnny'. There's a famous author/speaker named Joni and she pronounces hers as Johnny. Both are pretty, tho. My mom almost named ME that lol!
