scabs on nipples and super sore??

Question

Does this mean my baby boy has a bad latch?? It is excruciating when he starts to nurse, my nipples on the very tips have scabs like blood has been there and it hurts so bad. I just got my milk in and am engorged so it's making his latch harder to achieve anyway. What do I do?? I feel like giving up but we are only 3 days in!!!!! Help?!?!

Sounds like a possibile bad latch. You can get a nipple shield to help protect your nipples along with the nipple butter. Do you have access to a lactation consultant? They can help a lot to get the latch correct.

I had a similar experience and went and got the nipple shield and it was the best $10 I ever spent! My nipples healed quickly and I don't dread having to feed her anymore. She's now 2 months old and can eat without the shield if I forget it at home but I can tell she prefers it so I've kept using it.

This happened with me I would cry and hurt to shower and my whole body would just tense up everytime my daughter would latch on I would be in so much pain so I bought this organic nipple butter and pumped for one whole week until my nipples got better I than latched her back on and now she is almost 6 weeks with a happy mommy and happy nipps lol. Don't give up! I also do both nurse and formula.

I don't know what to say if it's a bad latch or not. I was the same way too. My nipples hurt so bad, I couldn't even put the bra on. I ultimately gave up because I couldn't deal with the pain. I do feel bad about it.

My nurses told me two things. One was to use lanolin every time at the beginning, after nursing. The other was that chances are it will hurt a bit till nipples get used to, well, being used so darn often.

They estimated about 10 days until this would happen. It took a bit less than that I think and now at two weeks it's just a minor discomfort in the first seconds when he latches.

What also helped me was to hold him in many different ways. I eventually identified what is most comfortable for me and helps him latch easiest.

I cried while nursing & dread it so much! I'm thankful my mom & husband encouraged me to continue. 
Nipple shields work wonders but weaning off of it was a little frustrating. 
I watched lots of BF YouTube videos! Lol

I had what I thought was scabs three days in, but it was actually dried colostrum and a little blood. Stick with it, it gets better.

2nd time mom. This is normal for me. I BF through it and by 10 days pp my nipples have toughened up and I have no problems now
