Can cream cheese frosting sit out?

I made some for a cake and I usually keep my cakes out (hate cold cake) at room temp...can cream cheese frosting that's on it stay at room temperature?

Well obviously depends how long... my mom makes cakes for a living and at weddings, cakes are normally out for about 6 hours, no matter what frosting or ingredients she uses it's okay.

I know my mom has always let her cakes sit out and she only uses homemade cream cheese frosting. My mother in law also makes pumpkin bars with cream cheese frosting and those sit out.
