Scared to take HPT

My husband and I have been TTC for awhile now. We stopped for about a year and recently started TTC again. My period was due 12 days ago but hasn't shown up as yet. I'm hoping I'm pregnant but I also know that I've been under a lot of stress at work so that is a possible factor. I want to test but I'm so scared that I might get that huge NEGATIVE sign that leaves me so depressed. Has anyone else gone thru this phase?
