which boob?!

Question

First time BF and was wondering if I'm supposed to switch boobs in the middle of a feeding? Baby is 1W&3D old and will nurse for about 15/20 minutes on one boob. Then the next time she nurses, ill use the other boob. But I've read that I need to switch & use both breasts during one feeding.. your opinions???

I tried to do this but my son sometimes would get upset and wouldn't latch onto the second breast. I ended up doing what you're talking about and we've been going strong that way for 7 months now!

I tried getting both boobs in one feeding session but I found she did better with doing one boob for each feed.

If she's getting enough off one side you don't have to use both. My pediatrician recommended me to feed that way so I could pump and build a supply for when I need bottles on the other side. As long as you still alternate boobs and you're comfortable and she's getting enough and gaining weight it's completely fine

About a third of women will do one boob per feed, so it's not an abnormal thing. That's what my son did, and he gained weight and grew like a champ!

My daughter started out with one side per feeding. Now, at 6 weeks, she will empty one side and take a little from the other side. So, with the next feeding, I start with the side she ended the prior feeding on. As long as your baby is gaining weight and seems content, keep doing what you're doing. As your LO gets bigger, you may find that she is not satisfied with one side anymore and will need both sides.

I let my son have one side as long as he wants and then offer the other. He almost always has both

My daughter feeds on one boob and than the next feeding I give her the other one! It's so much easier than  interrupting them.

I only did one and did the other the next time and ended up with mastitis!! I'd really suggest doing both at each nursing session

I give each side a max of 20 mins. If he's still hungry after 20 mins I switch sides. Then he's usually on the other side for a few mins before falling asleep. I just like knowing he's full without a doubt.
