Things Children Shouldn't See.

"Back in the 70s I was a little girl. We lived in the suburbs with several other families and I had three cats that I adored. There was a few other kids on my block but two were boys whom I hated because they were always mean to my cats. No matter how many times I told on them they wouldn't leave them alone and my mom wouldn't let me keep the cats inside because she didn't want a litter box in the house.

There was a empty field behind the row of houses on our side that us kids would play in all the time. It was big with a creek running behind it which we would swim in in the summer. One day some time during spring, I heard those boys screaming in the field and I looked up from my garden to see them running towards the houses yelling at me to get my mom. I became scared and angry. Last time something like that happened they had hurt another little girl, and since they wanted my mom I thought this was it. They had gone too far and hurt one of my cats. I yelled for my mom to come out and ran into the field to find my cats who often played there. I didn't really care if my mom came out because she wouldn't take my cats seriously but I did hear the screen door slam shut like someone came through it and she was the only one inside.

I didn't see anything in the field and the boys rushed up to me only stating that "it's in the creek". I of course assumed they ment my cat that they had probably beaten or drowned or something else. The other boy told me not to go but I took off down the field and over the broken fence that was put there to keep people out of the creek I guess. It was on the ground by then so you only needed to walk over it. There I smelt it, something was dead and had been dead for a while. I being just a kid didn't know that you had to be dead more than a couple hours for there to be a smell, I only knew what the smell ment and kept looking. Had I known differently I would have realized the smell wasn't my cats because I had just seen them a few minutes before. But I didn't know, which is what helped in screwing me up for a long time. There on the bank near the broken fence was a black and muddy metal suitcase that was unlatched. I had never seen it before and the smell got worse as I got closer. I thought I was going to open this and my cat would be inside and God knows what else... I opened it and what I saw I can remember clearly to this day. It wasn't one of my cats, it was part of a human being. What part I still don't know. It was just meat with no bones crammed into it and the smell was debilitating. I think if you had seen in from far away maybe you would mistake it for pig skin and pork chops, but up close even I knew at that age what I was looking at. The smell hit me right in the face and it burned my eyes, so I slammed the case shut and ran back across the field. My mother was standing there, clearly annoyed that she had been pulled away from her chores and asked what was wrong. All my years of life hadn't trained me on the proper words to discribe this, so I said something like "There's a person in a suitcase by the creek". My mother just looked at me like I had a fever and took me by the hand which I knew ment she wanted me to show her. We got to the top of the feild over looking the creek and fence and she stopped. I was shorter obviously so I couldn't see over the hill yet but she obviously saw it or something she didn't like and practically dragged me back the other way. We made it to the house and I was still sobbing. She phoned the police and took me to our next door neighbors, who also happened to be my moms cousin. My mom and a police officer tried to get me to tell them what I saw and how I knew it was a person, but again my childish vocabulary failed me. I just knew it wasn't a pig, it wasn't any animal, it was a person who had white skin before they died. They all had to tell me to straighten up and speak clearly several times for me to get the whole story out with my crying. The police questioned the boys and several others went to find the suitcase while I stayed inside. Weeks later we found out that a local druggy had killed his girlfriend, a teen who my parents knew. He had dismembered her and tried to hide the parts where no one would find them. Don't ask me why this was dinner conversation with a little girl in the room, but that's how I found out what happened."
