Nipple shields anybody?

So my son is 6 weeks and been having trouble breastfeeding. Back and forth between bottle and breastfeeding.In the hospital the lactation consultant gave me nipple shield to use. She state I have short nipples.😕 anyways this past week I been trying breastfeed my kid straight through the weekend to practice more.  I notice that when he latch it still hurts even around my areole at times.(not sure if the shield pitch it)
My son sucks hard that I notice that the top of my nip is being pull through the nipple shield opening holes at the top. It kinda look a small blister. I finally decided to take a break from breastfeedingon day 2 from the pain. I pumped on that side I ended up having tons of blood coming out with my milk.(strawberry milk) I wonder if I need to go up in the size? If that normal with the shields? Also I find it frustrating because the shield falls off easily or will not stayin place. I have use my fingers as V shape to hold it down while my kid nurseing.  
How long am I supposed use shield?

What size is the nipple shield ? I have a midium and I have pretty big nipples

I started using a nipple shield a couple hours after my baby was born due to my flat nipples. He is now 5 months old and just started to breastfeed without the shield. I never really had any problems with the shield, the only annoying thing about it for me is that it doesn't stick at the beginning but, once he starts feeding, the shield would stick right away. 
Maybe you need a bigger size? 
My nipples are somewhat big and the medium size worked just fine for me. 
Also, if the shield isn't sticking maybe your baby isn't latching properly? If that's not the problem then I suggest putting a bit of Lansinoh nipple cream on the sides of the shield. This was recommended by one of the nurses at the hospital when I first started using the shield.

Was using a nipple shield for around 5 months then one day she just decided she didn't need it. She has a shallow latch and I was told I had short nipples. Aside from a few days of adjusting we haven't had the shield and she transitioned on her own. If ur having pain you may need to go up a size.

You poor thing!!! I used a shield on one side I have an inverted nipple. I hated the shield for the same reason it never sticks and makes a mess. I learned if it was clean it sticks much better (as long as your baby doesn't rip it off). I use the medula soap soke for all my stuff as it works very well. I used my shield for about 3/4 weeks and than tried taking it off half way between feeding to eventually tossing it all together. Your nipples and ur baby  just seems to figure it out on there own after a few weeks and you don't need it anymore.

I'm running into the same issue. Did you try getting a bigger size? I have short nipples and am trying to move away from using the shield but in the mean time I need a solution! Hoping to try out what worked for you.

You likely need a larger nipple shield. Always try to get him latched without the shield first, then if he doesn't latch properly after a few minutes, put the shield on.

If you are having trouble getting the shield to stay, try putting lanolin on your areola and then place the shield. The Lanolin is safe for baby, will help your nipples heal, and will act as an adhesive for the shield. Win, win, win.
