I set a timer on my phone for 5 mins. Depending on the cry I'll go in to soothe or I won't. If he is just whining I extend the timer to 10 mins. If he is hysterical I go in talk to him rub his back and give him the pacifier. I know blankets are against sids protocol but he sleeps so much better with his "favorite blanket". He falls asleep great at night and finally his naps are better. Do what you feel is right for your baby. It doesn't hurt them to cry as long as they are fed and changed and not in pain or discomfort.

Honestly we had to just be firm.  When she cried I literally set my alarm for 5 mins and then went in. 5 mins by the way seems like an hour when they are crying which is why the alarm helped.  Then I'd go in and reassure her that it was okay, and she needed to sleep and I'd see her in the morning.  I didn't pick her up but placed my hand on her belly and or stroked her hair.  Then go in after 10 mins, and 15. This went on for about 3 days and now we have no issues. I'm not going to lie those three nights were tough and she did cry for about 2 hours the first night, an hour the 2nd night, and 3rd night.  She sometimes whines for about 3 mins because she doesn't want to go to sleep but most of the she's sleeping in less than a minute after I put her down.
