surprise early delivery

Melissa
After reading a few negative birth stories, I thought I would share mine as I feel really positive about the whole experience.
I was 36wk 5days.
My day started with an obstricians appointment. Everything was fine and I headed to work where I worked until 6pm then I went to the local pub for dinner and trivia. I got home had a shower and lay down when my water broke. Well more like burst. It was like a tap on high pressure.
We were not prepared. We called the hospital who told us to come in. I hadn't finished Packing so my husband ran around gathering last minute items. At this stage I wasn't really feeling anything more than period pain with no contraction like trends. I felt nothing before my water broke.
I got in the passanger seat of the car when I realised my husband had a few beers and couldn't legally drive. So I drove to us to hospital.
It's only a 15 minute drive but by the time we arrived I had filled a maternity pad and was leaking all over the place.
I was given a steroid injection and medication to stop my contractions. My dr was hoping to give my little one a couple more days for her lungs to develop. I was able to get a few hours rest, before I the intensity went up and I was woken. After about an hr I buzzed a midwife who checked my cervix and I was 7cm.
After that exam the pain tripled and after giving the gas a go I decided I was going to want an epidural.
My birth plan was not to have an epidural, but I found the gas made me feel groggy and sick.
The administration of the epidural was fantastic. So quick and I didn't feel a thing. It was like instant relief. My dr calls it labour first class.
From then on I didn't feel a thing. I didn't even feel my contractions. My midwife told me when to push. After pushing for a while I needed a vacuum assured delivery. I also got an episiotomy and a further tear (3rd degree), none of which I felt.
I was very lucky with my midwife, she made me very much as ease we were even laughing at some points.
I don't feel robbed that I didn't feel everything, I actually feel empowered. I enjoyed my labour, My recovery has been easier and I have been able to be a better mother to my child.
It's important to keep an open mind with labour and remember everyone is different and what works for one won't work others.
Introducing Sierra Londyn. Recovering from Jaundice, but otherwise heathy despite her early arrival.
