1. When I was in 8th grade it was 2007 and I lived in a rural area. Rural Halloween is different from suburban Halloween, it sucks because there's not many houses and you have to walk for a long time between. On the other hand houses tend to give more candy either because they don't get many visitors or maybe they feel sorry for you and the walks down woodsey roads are creepy. So maybe it's not all bad. Anyway my two friends, Jordan and Kyle, were trick-or-treating with me that year as they usually did every year. Another thing about rural areas is parents are more afraid of animal attacks than your neighbors. Practically everyone knows each other. So we vist the first houses that are kinda close together and we got a decent load of candy, which took maybe 30 minutes. Then is was time to move on to the further out houses that took longer to talk to. In case you didn't know, candy-loving 14 year olds don't like long walks. We eventually get to a house that has the porch light illuminating a table with a orange bowl on it. There was a note next to it that said something like "If you really want to be scared come around back". My two friends thought it might be some cool Halloween thing set up but I was suspicious. "Out here?" I said. We were in the backwoods of bumblefuck nowhere, no one decorates out here much less expects trick-or-treators. They insisted so I went. We went aroud to the back yard and there was another note "If candy is what you desire you have to look closer to the fire". I still remember the stupid riddle and the only fire was a torch in the middle of the yard. There was nothing by it but there was a wooden shed nearby next to the woods. Jordan was looking around it but Kyle was with me now because this was totally suspicious. We let him go though, probably because this was the most exciting thing we had seen all night. I'm watching Jordan look around when Kyle grabs my shoulder and tells me there's someone in the upstairs window. I look up and this nasty old house and see curtains moving like they'd just been closed. I looked at Kyle but he was looking at the shed now and pointing at it. There was a face peering around in its' window. It was time to leave. We went to grab Jordan but he was frozen and looking in the woods. There was a person coming out of the trees in a horrible mask made of who knows what, and Jordan was laughing like it was a joke. I guess he thought it was part of the show. This dude had a machete in his hand and was walking to us in the crappy light of the tiki torch, I was praying this was part of the show too at this point. They went unanswered because the guy ran and swung the machete at Jordans face and he barely missed when he dodged. We ran and all the way down the dirt road, then up the paved road and back to Kyle's house. Jordan threw up on the grass, then we went inside to tell Kyles parents and they called the cops. The cops came and they took us in their car to the house this happened at but there wasn't anyone there by then though. They searched the house but there wasn't a sign of them. We told them what we saw and they told Kyles parents they'd look into it. That was the last time I went trick-or-treating.

2. I was trick-or-treating with my then two youngest nieces, we'll call them S and M. I was about 13, so S must have been 8 and M was 5. My dad would drive us to the nearest town to trick-or-treat because we lived rural, and he would slowly follow us in the comfort of the car while we braved the cold weather in thin costumes for the sake of candy. However we would often change streets by walking directly through backyards/alleys and he would meet us on the other side after he drove around, which usually took a few seconds. This year we went to special elderly community where all the seniors got their own little house. They people there were nice and gave good candy, it was also a closed community and seemed safe. This place was surrounded by decorative trees but in between the streets we needed to go through was a real patch of woods. Thankfully the ground was clear so my dad started to head around while we walked through the trees. I remember us talking about how nice it was because the trees blocked the cold wind. M had to pee, but there was no where to go so one of us had to help her go in the woods. I said I'd stand watch in case someone showed up so S could help her, but actually I just didn't want to help. I never said I was a nice 13 year old. I walked to the edge of the woods and told my dad M had to pee so I was going to go stand watch, which I did but I didn't need to. There wasn't a soul in sight besides my dad reading the newspaper in his car about 40 feet away. I stood in the trees just to be out of the wind but I wondered what was taking so long. I wanted to get as much candy as possible before my dad decided we should leave. Then I heard someone scream. I was surprised my dad didn't budge, he obviously didn't hear it. I heard it again and ran several feet into the trees. I didn't see where S and M went to the bathroom but I was too scared to call and give away my position. I looked for them frantically and heard S call my name, she sounded sick. Then I heard this horrible sound like tires screeching on pavement, like maybe someone was doing wheelies. It stopped then I heard it again and it was more clear. It wasn't tires, it sounded like a group of people screaming in agony or anger in the distance. It was terrifying and I didn't know where it was coming from. I spun around to see S pop out from behind a tree and it scared the crap out of me, both figuratively and literally, good thing my costume was a dress and not pants. She had M with her and they were both crying and scared. I took them to the edge of the trees until we saw and dove into the backseat of dads car. To my surprise we weren't crying anymore and were silent pretty much all night. We didn't talk about it together until I was 18 and they said there was a bunch of little kids walking around in the woods with us, but they were fast, toddler sized and completely black. I didn't see them in the dark but apparently the only reason they saw them was in the moonlight beaming in from between the trees. They saw several of them while they squatted down and that's when I heard them scream the first couple of times, they also heard the screams that sounded like tires.

3. When I was the age were most of my friends decided they were too old to trick or treat my dad and I made the call that that year would be my last to do it too. I was probably 14 or so? I went to get my last bag of childhood memories and it was all good for hours. Then about 11pm most people had left and I decided it was probably time to go home too. It was dark in my neighborhood but pretty well lit with street lights and light-up decorations on lawns. I enjoyed the scenery and came across some older guy dressed as a machete killer or something who had white party bags in his hands. He said hi and I did too, then he asked if I wanted the last of his candy -refering to the white bags. Me being the stupid kid I was was like hell yeah and opened my pillow case to recieve them. I said thanks and continued home. I was on my street when I noticed the sound of someone behind me, I glanced back with a mouth full of morsels and it was the old guy. He was further back but I recognized his machete welding figure in the shadows. I thought it was weird and got creeped out. I decided to cut through a alley opposite my side of the street and jump a fence, then I would hide in my neighbors bushes unstead of leading him to my house if he really was following me. I do that and it turns out he was following me, he obviously had lost me but I saw him walk straight past my bushes and I waited until I couldn't see him to bolt home back the way I came. I forgot about it until I was going through my candy and noticed the white bags again, but they didn't have candy in them. It looked like pills. Lots of pills in plastic peppermint wrappers. I showed my dad and told him what happened and he called the cops, who took the pills and my story. I think what this creep was trying to do was follow me in case I ate the pills, hoping maybe I would pass out.
