Do I ask him?

I started seeing this guy and things are going really well ... How ever after going with this guy my sister now tells me just to be careful because in a previous relationship from years ago he apparently beat his girlfriend up. 
Do I ask him about it I now feel on ease ?

This happened with a friend of mine, she asked him and he lied to her obviously and was like "no of course I'd never do that" he ended up hitting my friend once. She whooped his ass and left him but the point is, if he can actually beat a girl he's not going to be an honest man.

This also happened to my best friend, she stood by the new boyfriend and believe him. They split up but before splitting up she asked him and he deneyed it and then funny enough he admitted it because he needed my best friend to take him to court about breaking his girlfriends arm.

He lied at first - of be very wary of this situation.
