travel for work - X-rays safe?

I have to travel for work about every 2 weeks and did my last trip last week and had the security do a pat down over going through the X-ray machine. I'm 6weeks and not showing so not sure if they believed me. Either way, I have to travel with my boss on Monday (yes on a holiday) and don't want to ask for a pat down in front of him. Are the new X-ray machines safe?  The TSA website says they are but I really have my doubts. Any insights?

They say they are safe, but personally I wouldn't risk it. If you get TSA pre✅, you skip the scanners. It might be too late to do, but call your airport and find out. $85 for 5 year pass.

You don't have to disclose the reason.  Just say you're nervous about Xrays because cancer runs in the family or something.  It will sound crazy but people do all kinds of crazy things and thus way you maintain your privacy.

I'm traveling next week, so I checked with my midwife. She said they are safe, but I could always opt for a pat down if I wanted to. I haven't decided yet if I will; I kind of hate the pat downs.
