has anyone tried using a purple shampoo on black hair?

One of the girls I work with has grey/white hair with some purple in it, when I asked her how she dyes it purple she said 'I just leave the purple shampoo in for an hour or two' I was wondering if it would do anything for my black hair? I don't want to dye it just yet but I would like a maroon/purple tint to it.
