birth control and smoking

Okaayy so today I get prescribed the pill, but won't start it till I get my period. However, when my doctor asked if I smoke, I said no... but I have once and might have another possibly when on the pill.. will smoking stop my birth Control? Make it less effective? I guess she had to ask for health issues but I'm not sure. Thanks
