Is my relationship a lost cause?

My boyfriend of a year broke up with me about a week ago. He's in his first year of university and I'm doing my grade 12 year homeschooling. His uni is 20 minutes from my house but we only were seeing each other once every 2-3 weeks but would talk everyday. He knew I wanted to see him more and knew I was unhappy so he broke up with me so he wouldn't "hurt me anymore". I'm in love with him still and he says he still loves me but he wanted a few days to think.. we are in this in between being together and apart and all I want is to talk to him I miss my best friend but I want to give him his space.. I don't know what to do. Does long distance (even tho it's not long) ever work out
