do you have to work if you have depression?

I have had depression now for 6 years 
I haven't seen a doctor

But this passed year had been the worst
My 3 best friends had passed and my son and I can't deal with it on my own

I also suffer with social anxiety I can't speak to anyone!!!!!!

I'm 20 and unemployed and I don't feel like I could work!!!

Do I have to???? :(

Go see a doctor and seek medication. There are many people with anxiety and depression that work. Don't let it cripple you. You need to find your inner strength to get help and you will feel much better. I was on anti anxiety medicine for years and it really helped me

You can file for help. There are programs that will give you money for it because it's a mental illness. Not enough to live off of though. I woukd start by getting some government assistance to get yourself on your feet, getting a place, food, etc. Got to counseling, or get medication because it can be very very serious. Once you get help, you'll be able to work and be healthy. But your mental needs come first.

You need to apply for state insurance, so you can see a doctor, get properly diagnosed, get medication and move forward with your life. It takes a long time to get disability for mental health and you need to start with doctor's diagnosis and treatment.

As a grown adult you do need to contribute to society, and that entails a job. As someone who has been diagnosed with depression I strongly urge you to see a professional. I know it isn't easy, but it isn't something to leave untreated. I hope you find the help you need.

I have extreme anxiety and depression, and for the longest time I was in denial about the feelings and emotions I was having. I was against ever really wanting to try medication, until a year ago. I found my anxiety and depression to become debilitating! I finally sought medical help and am now on medications that allow me to focus, function and enjoy life. Living in your house forever, isn't a life. You deserve to feel good and feel better, and get out and experience life! Go seek professional help! You'll be thankful you did!

Clinically diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety, panic disorder and phobia at age 15. It has been 11 years of torture. I have been a guinea pig for different physicians (from family doctors to psychiatrists). I am extremely sensitive to most medications (allergic to 3/4 of the SSRIs available today).
I have struggled for 11 years with keeping jobs due to my inability to process my thoughts properly. However, I have still maintained work (up until getting pregnant) since the age of 16. I found that working in factories (where you can keep to yourself) is usually easier.
I was diagnosed with depression 5 different times over the last 11 years. It seemingly came and went. I was also diagnosed with bipolar by 2 different physicians but I am not currently being treated for this. 
I will tell you that the BEST THING I have ever done for myself is finding a GOOD psychiatrist who will work with a CBT (cognitive behavioral therapist) that you get along with. This therapy is essential to understanding how your brain works, how to retrain it, and getting better.

You can work and have depression, anxiety, bipolar, schizophrenia and a wide variety of mental illness. You have to be proactive about seeking help though.
