IUD confusion please help

How long does I take for the copper IUD strings to soften? I was with my partner about to have sex when he had his finger in me while I was laying down and said he felt something prickly but when I was standing and checked I didn't feel it much. Could my IUD have moved or my strings just haven't softened yet
