What makes the united states free?

I've always wondered what the difference between us and other countries were, how are we free ?

Pfft please, our country is anything but free.

The united states free?? Since when?? I believe america is one country you have to pay the most! I live in Canada and have to pay NOTHING to go to the hospital each time or to go to labor and delivery to have my son!

As a European I don't think it is free at all in fact from being on glow I am so thankful that i am not an American. Having to pay for medical care and some of the posts about medical debt, going back to work after 12 weeks of having a baby 😩😭 
Of course we pay through taxation but our system seems a lot fairer and seems to work a lot better in favour of working mothers

Things have changed a lot in the world since the founding of the US, but the main original things that made us "more free" than other countries at the time:
Religious freedom
Freedom from an upper ruling class (democracy being a system where every citizen gets a say)
Innocent until proven guilty (most countries are still the other way... Although I could be wrong on that)

I was born here and was always taught in school from an early age that we were the best country in the world. Until I was older and capable of learning some things on my own I thought every other country was third world status. As an adult I'm clear on the fact that that's not true. While it's true that we have a lot of freedoms that some other countries don't, we have pros and cons just like any kfber country does.

There's a lot of countries who suffer from a lot compared to the United States ... Some governments are very corrupt and controlling, (yes, the USA has its issues too, but it's not as bad, although I think it's getting worse). In the United States, we were given freedom of religion, freedom to vote, freedom of speech... But I feel like some of that is being taken away.
In some countries, it is a crime to disagree or speak against the king/queen/president. In some countries, you are murdered or put in jail for believing in any other religion than Islam (for example) or you have to pay a tax to be a different religion. (Google "voice of the martyrs" for their stories)..  These are just a few examples.

So basically we're as free as our government wants us to think we are?

That's how I am I just don't understand what makes us do different, and FREE as they say. What can we do that others can't?
