please help need some suggestions

Hi guys, so i had my first OB appt Im 11 weeks and the Dr was saying something about from week 11-13 theres a certain test to find out whether baby has Down's syndrome or not? Has anyone done that test? Is it really necessary to do it? This is my first pregnancy, im not even sure my insurance covers that test? Please help.
