electronic devices for my 5 year old?

So we live in a time kids start playing with a phone or watching TV at a very young age and I don't want that for my children to be honest. We always raised our son to be kind and respectful and play and share with other children and I don't wanna brag but he's wonderful. Now my husband's career is going straight up doing extremely well, we're living in a gated community in Los Angeles County and as fancy as it sounds its bullshit. My husband and I were raised in a completely different world also close to LA but with nothing. Besides the point that most of our neighbors are braggers and act like they were born with a golden pacifier (which probably is even true) their kids are even worse. Whenever I see them they're distracted with phones and whatever and to be honest I dont care about how they raise their children- they barely even raise them by their own they have nannies for that- but it does influence my child because in pre school all kids have phones and all that stuff and he was like "mom can I have a phone please".
I don't know what to think about that or what to do I just wanted to ask what other people think would suggest me to do...
I don't know if this is the right room either but I think it actually is a controversial topic.

Maybe this will make me the worst mom ever (when it happens) but my children won't have mobile phones until middle school. This is only if they decide to engage in extracurricular activities where after school practice or travel to compete is going on. I didn't get a cellphone until then for the same reasons, so when we had out of town games I could call my mom and tell her when we left and when we were close. It's not necessary and the dependence on electronic devices is heartbreaking. Kids need to be kids and play outside, get dirty, have adventures...not stay cooped inside playing fruit ninja (etc).

I don't think it's okay for young kids to have electronic devices. I'm 16 and got a phone when I was 12, the flip phone. I don't think it's neccicary at all for a 5 year old to have a phone. Mabey we live in a diffrent time but I think that doesn't mean we should just gives phones to little kids. They should be playing outside, playing with anything that is real, not a phone.

I don't think it's bad for children to be exposed to electronics at a young age. We are in a different time and every generation has more accessibility to a screen. The key is moderation. Read a book, play outside, take a nap, and then play on a tablet for a little while.

I think their needs to be a happy medium. Its important for kids to learn and experience electronics because its the world we live in and eventually the experience will benefit them. My daughter is in 1st grade and her school send her home once a week with a tablet. On the flip side too much electronics is bad also. My daughter has a tablet,play station and a kids lap top but her time is very limited on each if its not educational.

What can I say. New money is like that. Just explain to him that that is not a good way to be, that money should either be spent of necessities like food and a house or on self betterment like oil paints and  tickets to the opera. The sooner he learns to look down on these horrible neighbours of yours the sooner he'll be able to find some nice friends.

Their is a study out that says to limit kids time on electronics if at all.

When we supply them with it it is keeping them from being bored, but it's good for the kids to be bored. It helps them become self aware and have imagination.

My 4 year old had an iPad. But we hardly ever use it and when we do its to watch Netflix while traveling. 
I agree with you op. My son is wonderful and I believe it's bc he's been taught right. Not letting someone or something baby sit him his whole life
