Should the age of consent in Australia be raised from 16 to 18?

You can legally have sex at 16 but can't drink or get your full license till 18? Why?

Not being funny but I highly doubt anyone actually sticks to the ages of consent. Yes drinking at 18 means you can't go out to clubs or bars underage but teenagers still drink. The age of consent means nothing unless in a rape case where the other party was a lot older. Personally I think it's better at 16 because if it was 18 people would be getting drunk and having sex for the first time

Honestly I don't think it matter so much on the law or age of consent being raised to any number every girl will decides at what ever age they choose to have sex regardless of what the law says.

The age of consent in Australia doesn't only apply to sex, 16 is just the standard age in which the government deems a child to be competent enough to make independent decisions about their life and understand the legal, moral, mental and physical consequences of their decisions. That's why on legal forms (ie. passports, medical forms, consent forms, etc) until the age of of 16, your parent or guardian are solely responsible for making decisions on your behalf.

18 is when you finish school (for most people) and are considered legally adult. You are given the same rights and consequences as anyone else over the age of 18.

In relation to sex, those laws are in place to prevent child abuse.  Teenagers  will still go have underage sex, no matter what anyone says, but at least those laws are there to make sure child abuse can be persecuted.

People will have sex anyway at that age. Making it higher will make more people just want to do it sooner
