Question

I just heard the American pediatric association said babies should sleep in parents room until 6-12 months.  I was not planning on having baby with me at all as I am an extremely light sleeper. Thoughts??

My daughter slept in her crib in the nursery from the get-go. She started sleeping through the night really quickly (she was about 6 weeks old), and is now almost 10 months. We plan to do the same with this baby as well. As long as you put the baby on its back to sleep with no blankets, crib bumpers, stuffed animals, etc in the crib, you are fine. You can have a baby monitor if it helps you, but I think it's important for you to take time to yourself to relax or take time with your SO to be a couple after the baby goes to bed.

Honestly, the SIDS guidelines vex me because they don't know what causes it and I want to scream when they add a new restriction for infant sleeping when it's already a lot for new parents to take in.

We co-slept with our daughter for a month and a half. And never had any issues. I was never afraid to roll on her, never afraid she'd suffocate, nothing. But it was time to put her in her own bed because I missed holding my husband at night.

They say keep them in your room next to the bed until 6 months but that didn't work for us. I am a light sleeper and the dog stays in our room and I didn't want her to knock the bassinet over on accident. So she went into her room, in her crib, with a video monitor at 1.5 months old.

My midwife said that these guidelines often err too far on the side of caution and having your baby in her own room only encourages independent sleeping and the ability for our baby to fall asleep on her own. She did suggest we DO follow the no bumper (unless it's mesh) and no toys, pillows etc in the crib rule. Which we don't have a problem with.

Our daughter is 4 months old on Friday and she falls asleep on her own and sleeps through the night (from 8pm-7am) in her crib in her own room with no issues.

But I suppose every parent does what's best for them. I just feel like if they restrict us anymore we will be parenting in bubbles until our children are 2-3 years old.

Our baby will be in with us, at first I wasn't going to do this with my first child but a friend of mine had her baby at the same time as I had my first and she left him in his own room thinking he had slept through the night she woke up super happy n refreshed only to sadly go into him to find him cold and grey. I will never forget that. It was awful, I kept my daughter so close after that and continued to with my other 2 and will with this one. Sudden infant death syndrome is heart breaking :( xx

I've never agreed with having a baby sleep in the same bed or room as the parents. Our baby will be in their crib in their nursery from day one. We'll have a camera in the nursery and a monitor in our bedroom so that I can hear if they wake up and do that I can check on them as well.

I moved both of mine at like 5 weeks. If they're in the room with me, I don't sleep. Every teeny noise they make wakes me up and I'm constantly on edge that they're about to wake up.

Honestly I moved my son to his own room just weeks after he was born. I tore a stitch after my c section because I kept waking up in a panic thinking I missed him crying or something. And I woke up with every little sound he made. Once I moved him, he slept better and I slept better. It's just a recommendation and isn't going to work for everyone. I don't think I could do it. You just do what you think is best and maybe follow the other guidelines really well like no blankets, bumpers, or anything the baby can suffocate on and you should be fine. My babe slept on a fitted sheet and that's it's. That way you can sleep better at night knowing you took procautions to make sure he's safe in the other room.

I am a newborn care lead and I train on SIDS. The main reason they recommend mom and baby in the same room is so mom can monitor the baby easier. They want mom to check and make sure the baby's chest is rising (baby is breathing) and that the baby hasn't rolled into a harmful position. However I find this rule to be a little over board. As long as you have a safe nursery and cringe the risk of SIDS is low. Nothing in the crib, pacifiers help the baby focus on something so they don't stop breathing, correct room temp ect. Camera monitors are great because if you wake you can simply look at the camera and check on baby

It has been advised in the uk for a long time that a baby sleeps in parents room for 6 months as it reduces the risk of sids. We had our daughter in with us until she was 12 months.
