I don't mean literally, but say someone was really sick or depressed, could being dumped/rejected be the nail in the coffin? I'm asking because it's an old cultural myth and I wondered if there was any truth behind it. I don't think a strong, healthy, and otherwise loved person would succumb.

Yes I absolutely do. My grandmother died in March of 2013 and left my grandfather behind. He was absolutely devastated with her death and died a few weeks later

Its called broken heart syndrome...a traumatic experience such as a death of a loved one causes temporary disruption of your hearts normal pumping function
